University Circle of Cleveland

Beginning our whirlwind tour of Cleveland we drove through Rocky River and Lakewood, finally arriving at University Circle. This historical neighborhood of Cleveland encompasses many cultural institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Western Reserve Historical Society, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Severance Hall, winter home of the Cleveland Orchestra.

A new addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art has just been completed which includes an enclosed atrium nearly the size of a football field.  It is a beautiful place to see wonderful art exhibitions, be warm, have lunch, and enjoy a chilly fall day.

One of the most amazing features of the museum is an interactive wall of photos of all the art in the museum.  When you touch a photo you are interested in, it grows larger and includes information about it.

This is the original entrance to the museum.

University Circle also includes Case Western Reserve University.  The Peter B. Lewis Building was designed by Frank Gehry to house the School of Management.  Peter B. Lewis and his mother completed a leveraged buyout of Progressive Insurance and made it the third largest insurance company in the United States.

We peeked inside Severance Hall.

In the distance we viewed the "Holy Oil Can" of the Epworth Euclid United Methodist Church.

We saw the outside of the Museum of Contemporary Art.

We walked by the Cleveland Botanical Garden and through the surrounding park which included a beautiful metal fence, metal and stone sculpture, and a stone wall.

Our intrepid guides:  Maggie and Tim.  So much to see, so little time.

  1. Oh you two, out again. I bet you knew I would be drawn to the rusty metal art. Big city, I guess you know where you are going. Have fun, and KEEP posting!
